In the motor repair and/or recovery industries, Electric and Hybrid vehicles bring additional hazards to the task of repair than your everyday petrol or diesel motors. Voltages found in these vehicles are significantly higher than those in other vehicles – currently up to 650 Volts direct current, in comparison to the more common 12/24 Volts dc.
High voltages in the EV and HV sector are identified as anywhere between 60 and 1500 Volts, with an accidental touch at 110 Volts turning fatal. High voltage is dangerous and can cause burns, shocks, sparks, explosions and even fires – this is the reason why working safely, with the appropriate equipment & protection, is imperative to the task.
Before starting any work on the vehicle, please ensure the vehicle has all the correct safety coloured chains and posts are around the vehicle to identify it to others.
Using the Heavy Base, Chain Support and Safety Chain, in addition to the attachable High Voltage signs, the vehicle is easily identified and cordoned off appropriately from personnel and unauthorised access – with a heavy base, the setup is more difficult to accidentally bump or knock over.
Even when isolated, vehicle batteries and their components may still contain large amounts of energy and retain a high voltage. Only suitable tools and test equipment should be used. You must always test and prove that any high voltage cable or electrical component is dead prior to carrying out work.
Not only is it important that the vehicle is safe to use but it is also important to regularly check your PPE equipment for damages, as even a tiny 'pin prick' sized hole in your gloves will cause serious injury as electricity will find its way through as it earths.

Signage is an essential (and a legal requirement) to inform and instruct personnel on safety protocol – it is vital for adhering to ISO 7010 standards and the Safety Signs and Signals Regulation (1996) legislation. In addition to advising personnel on the requirements of staying safe, there should also be sufficient signage in order to instruct them in the unfortunate case of an accident in their environment.
